The rogue is somebody sneaky and cunning, and a lot of different archetypes fall into that, from assassins to street criminals to spies to swashbuckling rogues to thief-acrobats. Rogue and Fighter are both very vague classes in terms of fiction. For example, the Hound in Blades in the Dark is a natural scout who can survive harsh environments, act with vengeance, and resist surprise and fear, whereas the Lurk can be naturally skilled at ambush, feats of superhuman strength, becoming ghostly for a few moments or acting in desperate situations. When you say that this is a homebrew game, how far outside D&D are you looking for? A lot of games have classes that don't focus on the same archetypes as D&D, but might give you ideas. On the other hand, I would see Geralt as more of a Ranger, supplementing combat skills with tracking and resistance and just a hint of magic. The classic D&D rogue/fighter is, of course, the Swashbuckler a rogue archetype that uses their Charisma as a combat stat and replaces a few out-of-combat tricks with some in-combat ones. So presumably this is someone who's primarily fight-based, but with a handful of non-combat tricks and skills.

In my mind, rogue/fighter is tricky as a combination because it's really just taking an existing slider and sliding it a bit further.
